A bit of this, a bit of that Ready, steady, go - the power of warm-ups

Noughts & crosses

An old activity which can be used in class as a warm-up or revision exercise. It has a lot of different possibilities, not only practising vocabulary. Actually, you can revise anything you want with your students. You may ask them to give definitions, to make sentences, dialogues, or stories, to give one or five examples, to speak, or to write. You can practise all sorts of vocabulary or grammar, but also language functions or different skills. There are no limits here. And the best option is to ask your students to prepare their own games. Have fun.

2 in 1 – Vocab and Grammar Revision

Another activity which can serve as a warm-up or the whole revision lesson. It’s all up to you. You can revise both vocabulary and grammar with your students at the same time.

First, show your students some examples (easier and more difficult ones are included in the presentation below) of definitions of words or phrases you want to revise – let the students guess them.

Secondly, ask your students to make definitions themselves and let their peers guess. You may ask them to make just one or two definitions if you want it to be just a warm-up; or more if it is to be a longer revision.

Then show the students these words in context and ask them to paraphrase the sentences, translate, fill in the gaps, whatever you want.

Finally, students are supposed to prepare their own paraphrases, translations, gap-filling tasks, etc with the words and phrases they prepared in stage one. Quite a challenge even for advanced learners.

Do you find this idea useful? Let me know in the comments.

FUTURE

This is a presentation on the revision of the following tenses: Future Simple, Future Intention and both Present Simple and Present Continuous in reference to the future. It is in the form of Mind Maps to be completed by your students. The students have to think about the usage, structure and characteristic words of each tense. Then there is some speaking practice.

This is the third part of the series. The first part is entitled Present Tenses, and the second one is called Past Tenses. You can find both parts on my blog. Hope you’ll like the whole pack.

The charm of spring

Here it is. The most charming season in the whole year. Maybe not in full blossom yet, but you may already see its first signs. So why don’t you go out for a stroll, listen to the birds singing, look up in the sky? I’m sure you’ll spot some returning finches or storks. Have a close look at the little buds on the tree twigs and the tiny blooming crocuses or windflowers under your feet. Breathe in the still cool but refreshing air. And simply enjoy the first spring sun rays on your cheeks. Afterwards just enjoy a cup of your favourite coffee while your students are dealing with the English spring tasks.

Girl power

It’s Women’s Day today so let’s celebrate. You’ll find a couple of exercises here for students on different levels, developing a variety of skills. I hope everyone will find something suitable for their students. All the best for all of you Super Women-Teachers.

GIRL TALK

This exercise will develop your students’ vocabulary. For quite advanced levels. Every sentence is woman-topic based. It’s full of challenging phrases worth elaborating on. My students will have to choose a couple of words which were the wrong answers and prepare their own ‘Fill in the gaps’ and ‘Write 3 definitions – only one correct’ exercises.

A GIRLS’ NIGHT OUT OR A FEMINIST SPEECH

Speaking time. The first task is to match the names of famous women to their quotations. And then depending on whether you have 1-2-1 lessons or teach a group of students you can either:

  1. Give or ask each student to choose one character and ask them to imagine they are at a girls’ night out. They meet and start talking about life, men, the usual stuff. Their task is to try to show their woman’s character and personality and include the quotation in a natural conversation.
  2. Give or ask your student to choose one character and prepare a 1-minute feminist speech including the quotation.

I do hope you will enjoy the Women’s Day and the topic-based lessons with your students. I would really appreciate if you let me know whether you and your students found the ideas useful. Have fun.

CHRISTMAS TIME

I’ve just gathered a few of my Christmas activities in one place for you to enjoy during your last lessons before or first lessons after Christmas. All of them can be found on wordwall. Short, quick, can be used as warm-ups, energizers or fillers. Suitable for teens and adults on different levels.

CHRISTMAS CATEGORIES

Students have to put the words and expressions into 4 different categories: Christmas decorations, traditions, food and winter time.

CHRISTMAS MATCHING

Students have to match the pictures to Christmas expressions.

CHRISTMAS QUIZ

Students have to choose the correct answer. It’s a typical vocabulary game.

CHRISTMAS PHRASAL CRAZE

This time we deal with grammar, and to be more precise with phrasal verbs. Definitely for more advanced students.

CHRISTMAS SPEAKING

And the last exercise is devoted entirely to speaking. Could be used as a typical work in pairs or speed dating activity.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

I hope you will find those activities useful, still this year or maybe in the future. I’d like to wish you all the best. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
